Week 8 Ski And Snowboard Course Review – Big White 2012

It’s week 8 and what a cracker! Weather wise the week kicked off with a spectacular blue bird day. The snowboarders were greeted by their instructor Mao the snowboarding ninja from Tokyo, Japan and they headed straight to Sun Run to enjoy the sun! Focus of the day was carving, they sliced and diced at mac 10 for the entire day! The groomers were in perfect condition, fast and grippy. The skiing crew hooked back up with Kristian for what was set to be another week of technical teaching, improvement and level 2 prep from Big Whites senior ski instructor.

Carving

With the level 2 exam looming, it was registration time on Monday. Those up for giving it a crack got themselves registered, everyone was stoked to be giving it a shot!

The sunny skies continued through in to Tuesday, a few of the group got hit with a cold so didn’t make it out to lessons. NBS Sam was back out with Laura giving her a helping hand working one 2 one on pressure control. Tuesday evening Laura and Rhiannon drew the short straw and headed in to the village to pick up some Scooby snacks for their house. An evening of chilling and film watching was on the cards.

Wednesday brought a tonne of snow, it snowed all day long! The snowboarders decided to throw themselves off a few jumps to make the most of the soft landings during the first few runs of the day. However they had to cover off their level 2 teaches, so the guys each took turns teaching a lesson under the watchful eye of their instructor, the note pad was out!

Practice Level 2 Teaching

In to Thursday and the pow continued to dump. The skiers took to the steeps to work on their short turns and level 2 teaching techniques.

Level 2 Short Turns

The snow got so deep in parts not even Dan could stay up on his board! Deciding to take a little rest in the snow.

Snowboarder Wipe Out

Our 4 week level one class took to the groomers on Friday to work on some stance and balance techniques. Feeling a little embarrassed holding a single pole at first, it was incredible to see how much this tactic instantly improved their skiing.

Our group evening meal took us back to the Gun Barrel. After a few beers and a slap up two course meal everyone was feeling tip top and up for a few games of pool. Pascal decided to show us his German pool skills by dominating the table!

Playing Pool

An early night on Friday was preparation for Saturday night, it was hockey night! Arriving in the village late afternoon the group stocked up on a few drinks and snacks for our trip down to Kelwona to see the Kelowna Rockets play Kamloops Blazers. Waiting in the car park was our very own private coach which whisked us down to the hockey stadium to watch what was anticipated as one of the best games of the season. Resulting in a 3-2 win by Kelowna, everyone was in high spirits to support our local team to victory! Continuing on the celebrations a number of the guys and girls stayed in Kelwona for a night out, hitting up a local nightclub and casino!
