CSIA Ski Instructor Course Diary Week 3 – Big White 2014

Happily getting into a neat little routine now, using the gondola as our morning commute up into the village for ski school. Similarly to last week we were kept in the same groups and met our new instructor. Everyone still pumped with adrenaline and excitement even after doubles-Sunday.

We are skiing everyday, working with amazing instructors and preparing for our level one CSIA assessments, what isn’t there to enjoy?! The week consisted of ski improvement exercises and concentrating on techniques, tricks and skills to help better our own skiing and to build confidence when teaching others. All these ideas camouflaged within the fun exercises introduced to us as we played in the fresh Canadian powder. To think this time last year I was writing my dissertation … this lifestyle is wayyy better.

We took a housemate trip out to Kelowna to visit Walmart and the Liquor Store on Wednesday. Sadly we missed wings but in the one visit we scarily managed to spend over a thousand dollars on food and drink; we will absolutely be living like kings for the rest of the month, definitely worth losing one night in Sam’s for. After unpacking the mammoth amount of food we settled in for a chilled night and began watching ‘The Walking Dead’, upon recommendation from our housemate. We managed to wade through half of season one in one sitting and continued to watch the second half on Thursday night, putting our social lives on hold for the American sitcom.

Friday again was fun day. The morning was dedicated to tactics and skills while the afternoon we raced one another and our instructor around the park. The racing came to an abrupt end when one of the boys decided to make their own path down rather than stick to the track, he obviously looked convincing in what he was doing because shortly after a group of children followed his lead into some powder, got stuck and caused a huge pile up. We made sure everyone was okay and then made a swift-ski-getaway back onto the slopes. We concluded the week in Sam’s (our second home) to evaluate our progress and talk about the on-coming assessment which was nicely followed by a NBS meal and some social drinks.

Saturday was chilled. We took the day off from skiing and spent the majority of the afternoon watching classic films and relaxing. As the evening set in we set off to Snow Pines for a little get-together, this time to celebrate Australia day with our new Australian friends, the time difference between Australia and Canada working to our advantage so we had an excuse to party all weekend. Sadly there was no fresh snow all weekend so skiing Sunday was pretty poor; a great excuse to come in and nurse our hangovers. Sunday night we had a cute housemate dinner and began reading up in preparation for the CSIA level 1 exams; another week under our belts.
