CASI Snowboard Instructor Course Diary Week 5 – Big White 2014

After a great fourth week Monday came around once again. Like every Monday, the majority of us headed down to the VCM to see who would be instructing us for the week. Sadly, Ash and Dane both ended up down at the hospital the previous night so they did not come out that morning. In a way, they should have considered themselves lucky due to the extremely cold temperatures.

Nevertheless, we headed out into the cold and started shredding around with our instructor Mike. It was a great day of jibbing around the mountain working on our first level 2 skills. Tuesday was not the best day to say the least. Blistering temperatures and low amounts of layers created a very cold situation for me. That, matched with the fact that my goggles were icing over completely forced me to head in for the day. Chilled through and through, I decided to use to the day for laundry and relaxing. But, it was also not a good day because Emily ended up breaking her collarbone on the warm-up lap and Kyal got a concussion during the afternoon session. Thus, everyone seemed to be in gloomy moods that night.

Wednesday was just as cold as the previous day, hovering around -20 C. Even though the sun was shinning and the snow was good we had to take multiple breaks during the day to warm up. We all headed to wings that night to warm up. Thursday was a great day of riding Gem Lake the more advanced side of the mountain. We headed to Sam’s again that night to play a little pool. Once Friday came around we were exited to do some Friday funday activities. Thus, we started to complete a tricklist of all 24 180s. We were all surprised to learn that that many even existed.

Not keeping score, we all tried the various 180 spins throughout the morning. I ended up hurting my heel a bit in the morning and decided to take the afternoon off to rest. I headed to Sams that night with everyone after having dinner at the Thai restaurant in town. It was a great night. The weekend consisted of rest during the morning and a great, progressive park session during the afternoon with friends. The conditions were great due to an increase in temperatures during the weekend. Luckily that night we received a couple centimeters of snow, which made Sunday super fun. After rest again in the morning I headed out in the afternoon with Luko to enjoy the very light fluffy powder. We shredded all over that day including Gem Lake, Falcon Chair, and over to the Blackforest. It was also Alice’s birthday that night so we celebrated by throwing a party that got kind of wild. All in all it was another great week here at Big White!
